What Is Sleep Apnea And Its History?

!±8± What Is Sleep Apnea And Its History?

Most people don't know what is sleep apnea but millions of people suffer from it. Like all things common, it goes unnoticed until it starts turning into a problem. A condition that was described by the English novelist Charles Dickens in his book The Pickwick Papers. The book describes a fat boy named Joe having the clinical symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. That is why it used to be termed Pickwickian syndrome. The term was coined by a famous Canadian physician, William Osler. Back then, people still didn't know what are its causes and effects. They only recognize the common symptoms such as snoring and snorting while asleep. They also associate it to people who are overweight. Charles Dickens lived during the 18th century, which means that this sleep disorder is not a new condition. People have been having it since the beginning of time and yet don't know much about it.

In 1965, an extensive study on this sleep disorder started, led by a French doctor named Dr. Gestalt. He conducted studies on people with sleep issues. His studies led to a deeper understanding of this sleep condition. People started to become aware of what is sleep apnea but still cannot find a cure. After more than 10 years, a Harvard physician named Dr. John Remmer finally linked airway obstruction to poor sleep. In 1978, Dr. Remmer coined the term 'obstructive sleep apnea' or OSA. It describes the type of this condition which is characterized by a blocked airway. This connection between airway obstruction leading to OSA paved the way to finding a cure. An Australian physician, Dr. Collin Sullivan, came up with a solution. In 1981, the 'Continuous Positive Airway Pressure' (CPAP) therapy was conceptualized. Along with his associates, they made the first CPAP machine. It is a device used for a method of air pressured respiratory ventilation. At first, the machine was bulky and noisy. But it has rapidly improved and was adapted by various medical companies. When news that a treatment is already available, there was a sudden demand for sleep facilities. Sleep clinics started to be established, which diagnose sleep disorders.

Before the discovery of CPAP, one of the earliest solutions for this sleep disorder was a neck surgery called 'Tracheotomy'. It makes a slit on the neck which will serve as an alternative airway passage. A tube is then inserted in the incision. It allows the person to breathe without the air passing through the nose and mouth. But now, because of the CPAP machine, a surgery is not necessary. Until today, CPAP therapy has become the most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.

Thanks to these physicians, people today already have an understanding on what is sleep apnea. Information is readily available on the internet. Further studies led to finding 3 different types - obstructive, complex and central. Sleep apnea machines and masks already have numerous designs to choose from. There have been a lot of development. All the information and solution we need are made readily available. Its all because of the people behind its discovery and research. It is now up to us to help disseminate this information to save people from this deadly sleep disorder. Sleep apnea symptoms often remain undiagnosed and this could lead to heart related problems. Spread the word and read more on what is sleep apnea. Who knows? The life you save could be your own.

Things to Do When You Cannot Sleep

!±8± Things to Do When You Cannot Sleep

Imagine, it is the middle of the night, the sky black with bright, white stars and you find yourself unable to sleep. Sometimes, it is impossible to sleep because you have got so much on your mind. Other times, you have gotten a great, new book and using a cordless picture light you read on into the night. Additionally, some people cannot sleep because of their diets. Even with cordless picture lights, keeping yourself entertained can be hard when those nights roll around. However, there are many things you can do to pass the time in the middle of the night.

One idea that can help when you cannot sleep at night is to watch a movie. There are various genres of movies to watch and each can provide a different nightly experience. Action movies are entertaining but make it hard to go to sleep because you get so involved with the movie. Likewise, any psychological thriller or mystery is too complicated to be a good movie to fall asleep to. Horror movies are a bad idea because, if it is really scary, it makes it impossible to fall asleep soundly. Some movies may promote nightmares while others may stir odd dreams. The safest genre would probably be a comedy because it leaves you happy and you do not have to follow along as closely as you would for other movies. Regardless what movie you pick, you should leave the sound down low in case you do fall asleep, so that it does not wake you up again.

Another idea to entertain you at night is to eat calming foods. Some foods, like turkey, literally make people sleepy. If you need to get a good night sleep and are feeling restless, eating food that makes you tired can help you fall asleep. Sometimes drinking milk or water fills you up enough to make you sleepy as well. Eating anything that will leave you full is a good idea (unless you are on a diet!).

Likewise, talking to other people that cannot sleep can be interesting and open up a new opportunity to learn about the world. Even if it is night here, it is morning and afternoon somewhere else in the world. By using websites that promote online penpals, you can make friends from around the world. Learning about different cultures can be beneficial and you will always have someone to talk to. You will be more open minded about things going on in the world and have a new appreciation for the life you lead.

Clearly, there are plenty of ways to keep you entertained, even in the middle of the night. While some ideas are exciting and interesting, making a habit of not sleeping is a bad idea. There are many health detriments that go along with not sleeping enough. Also, not sleeping can really put a damper on the next day. Getting enough sleep should be very important to everyone and if anyone is having multiple nights of not sleeping, they should talk to their doctor about getting help.

CPAP Nasal Masks and the Other Components of CPAP Machines

!±8± CPAP Nasal Masks and the Other Components of CPAP Machines

Do you know what a CPAP machine is? Better yet, do you know what CPAP means? For starters, CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. Yes, there's a lot of technicality there, but the whole point of this jargon is that this kind of pressure is generated to help a person who cannot generate it on his own. In other words, CPAP is a kind of pressure used to help someone who has difficulty in breathing, most especially for those who suffer from sleep apnea.

Oops, that's another medical and technical term! Once again, in simple terms, sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by breath interruptions. This condition happens when the person's air passage is blocked (usually by the tissues in the throat).

The CPAP machine was developed by Dr. Colin Sullivan in 1981. This Australian researcher, together with his colleagues Berthon-Jones, Issa and Eves, "invented" this mechanism primarily for the treatment of sleep apnea. Early CPAP machines were large and bulky, but today, they are getting more compact, making them capable for transport. While early CPAP machines are only used in the hospitals, today, they are widely used in the homes of patients as well. You can even rent CPAP - in Toronto and elsewhere - nowadays.

So what does a CPAP machine look like? What are its components?

The CPAP machine is divided into three major parts. Let's discuss them one by one.

1. The Flow Generator. This is the heart of the machine. It is the part responsible for providing the airflow pressure.

2. The Hose. Obviously, this part is responsible for connecting the interface (discussed below) with the flow generator.

3. The Interface. This is the part that you put on your face and which makes the introduction of the airflow pressure into your system possible. The most common interfaces are CPAP nasal masks, nasal pillows, and full-face masks.

CPAP nasal masks are perhaps the simplest among the three interfaces considering that they cover only your nose. In essence, pressure goes through your nose, then down to your throat, and to your lungs. Among the three, CPAP nasal masks are perhaps the most comfortable.

Contrary to CPAP nasal masks, full-face masks cover your whole face. If you are a bit claustrophobic, you may not want to use this interface. Full-face masks, however, are great at preventing you from breathing through your mouth. Sleep apnea patients must breathe through the nose to keep a "close pressure system."

In addition to CPAP nasal masks and full-face masks are nasal pillows. CPAP nasal pillows - in Toronto or elsewhere - are also known as lip-seal mouthpieces. This interface is made up of a "pillow" (a small tube) and a set of straps that keep it in place (right below the nostrils).

The flow generator, the hose and the interface are the three main components of CPAP machines. But there are a number of accessories and optional features available in the market today. All of them are meant to give the patient comfort in an uncomfortable state - they are all meant to help them sleep better.

How to Keep Yourself Awake

!±8± How to Keep Yourself Awake

After endless hours of work or studies, a good sleep seems like the best thing in the whole world. These are the times when you feel thankful for not being an insomniac. Yet, there are also times when you wish you were. The times when you are just a nap away from missing a deadline or not fully prepared for an early morning examination the next day. Sometimes you just cannot help it and you wish you could stick something between your eyelids. The sleep seems to be the instinct that is hardest to resist. People try different instant home made recipes to send the sleep fairy away. The most common is either tea or coffee. There are many addiction and health issues with caffeine but tea is regarded as a better and healthier option. Organic tea such as organic herbal tea and organic oolong tea are the ones recommended by the herbalists due to their medical benefits.

Not every one is comfortable with the idea of coffee and tea and for some it really does not work. After all, it is also useless to waste your precious time by the coffee or tea maker when you need to work. Even if you do not have much work, there is also a disorder called Hypersomnia. In this disorder, a person might always feel dizzy and sleepy. Not just that a person feels that way, a Hypersomniac does not miss any chance to lay down his head on possibly anything and take a tour down the nap valley. Excessive sleep is an indicator of slow metabolism, perhaps. There are many ways to get rid of untimely sleep, here are just few of them.

Watch What You Eat: Nearly all of our physical and mental health depends on the food we eat and the amount of food we eat. Overeating can cause our body to lose too much energy during the digestion. Therefore, eating too much causes us to feel sleepy. Same is for food that takes much time to digest such as food with higher fat content. Vitamins are excellent source of energy so include that in your diet especially Vitamin D and B's. Keeping yourself hydrated will keep your body energized.

Acupressure: If you need to reduce your fatigue and be alert for a while, try the age old acupressure therapy. Studies have shown that tapping slightly at the top of your head and top of the back of your neck helps a lot in easing the fatigue down. Earlobes and area below the knee are also found to be good pressure points for this purpose.

Light Up the Environment: Calm and peaceful environment might be relaxing but it can put you into peaceful sleep. Make sure that light is always bright and you have company to keep you entertained. Music can also be a very good stimulant.

Caffeine nap: Some people complain about caffeine not helping them at all. This is because it takes time. If you really feel extremely sleepy, drink a cup of coffee and take a quick nap for 15 minutes. By the time you wake up, the caffeine will start its work and you will feel more energized.

CPAP Machines For Sleep Apnea

!±8± CPAP Machines For Sleep Apnea

Are you having trouble sleeping? Do you wake up feeling un-rested? You might want to think about getting tested for sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when you get so relaxed during sleep that the throat passage closes and you stop breathing until you wake yourself up. The word "Apnea" is derived from the Greek language meaning "without breath". People with this disease use a CPAP machine.

A CPAP machine is a small device that helps you breathe. It sits by your bedside and quietly sends air pressure through a tube into a mask attached to your face. The pressure will force air into your air passages and allow you to breathe evenly throughout the night without waking up.

CPAP machines, standing for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, were actually first invented while experimenting with household vacuums blowing air into patients' airways at different levels of pressure. Dr. Colin Sullivan invented them in 1981 at the University of Sydney in Australia. It helps with fatigue, blood sugar problems, blood pressure and other conditions. It also helps with snoring. If you have been known to rattle some doors then this machine may be able to help you by pressing back the soft tissue in your air passages.

If sleep apnea is not treated it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure or diabetes. If you notice yourself having symptoms such as difficulty focusing during the day, constant fatigue or if you experience irritability then you may want to get tested.

To be considered apneic, you have to stop breathing for at least 10 seconds per attack and have a blood oxygen desaturation level of three to four percent. If you stop breathing five or more times per hour then you can be diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. It is important that it is treated to prevent danger.

Of course machines like CPAP machines may not cure this disease for everyone. It can only help improve sleep to help reduce or prevent the risk of severe health problems. It may be uncomfortable, and take some getting used to but it is a good investment.

Some complaints from using this machine are discomfort, chafing, and claustrophobia. If you are uncomfortable because of the air pressure you will be able to adjust the level of pressure until you can work up to where you need to be for it to be fully effective. It does take some getting used to for many people. Chafing can be taken care of with nasal and facial cushions that attach to the mask. It might soften the sides of the mask so they don't dig in to your skin. Also, there are different styles, sizes and shapes of masks for you to try. Claustrophobia may take a little more effort. Try holding the mask up to your face without the strap at first until you can get used to it. Just nasal masks or masks just for your mouth may help you with feeling a little freer as well.

CPAP machines can save lives. It is just up to you whether you are willing to take the first step.

How to Fight Sleep Deprivation

!±8± How to Fight Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation is a common sleep disorder which is reaching an alarming rate in United States. Scientific studies show that human mind and body requires a proper sleep of six to eight hours everyday. It helps in restoring memory, concentration, mental, emotional and physical functions. There can be many factors that can cause such a disorder, including too much caffeine, drugs, stress and emotional or hormonal issues. Some people used to blame it on tea but this happens to be a false conception. Teas are really healthy and organic ones such as organic white tea and organic rooibos tea can help fight off the fatigue due to lack of sleep.

There can be many types of sleep disorders and causes may also be different in every case. However, the effects are always hazardous and sometimes equal the effect of being drunk. A person, after many days and week of sleep deprivation might act strangely and rudely. They are unable to perform well, both professionally and socially.

There are many sleep disorders which seem to be incurable without high dosage of relaxants and sleep inducing medicines. Yet, sometimes changing your lifestyle can play a very important role in fighting off the symptoms. Here are few tips that can help you in getting an undisturbed and proper cycle of sleep. These tips are not only for the ones already suffering from the disorder. In fact, these points will help more in preventing sleep deprivation rather than cure it.

• First of all, make an attempt to set a proper and regular waking up and sleeping time. This will help you get in an automatic cycle. Remember when your body follows a regular timetable, the mind automatically starts working as an alarm clock.

• Exercising few hours prior your sleeping time will stimulate and energize your mind and body. This might prevent you from getting to sleep at a proper time. It is better to postpone the exercise session for early hours of the next day. This will keep you active when you actually need to be.

• Caffeine and nicotine are helpful in wearing off the whole day's fatigue but its okay if you are tired near the bedtime. Caffeine and nicotine must be avoided at late hours.

• Good to be tired before going to bed does not mean you should do extra stressful and tiresome work before going to bed. In fact, that will be just like exercising and might make you more alert rather than sleepy.

• If you are already facing problems in sleeping at night, eliminate all the day time naps from your schedule. And if you really need one, just go a for quick power nap once in a day.

• Avoid eating too much food, especially junk, before sleeping. A digestive system busy in work might prevent you from falling asleep. If you really feel hungry, then go for food with higher fiber content.

• A shower at any hour can make you feel refreshed but a warm bath by the end of the day can help relax your body from stress and fatigue. This makes it easier to comfortably fall into a complete resting position.

Discover the Significance of Threatening Water Dreams in Your Lives

!±8± Discover the Significance of Threatening Water Dreams in Your Lives

Most of the times, the dreams that we come across are too weird. The strange thing is that they have a compelling feel about them, which makes us realize that they can become a reality. Some dreams are pleasant while others are not so attractive. Dreaming is not something voluntary, it occurs quite naturally. For instance, you may like a dream in which you are on fishing and camping excursion in a luxurious floatplane charter or floatplane to Tofino. However, all dreams about water are not so pleasant. There are some people who see the threatening floods in the city or the havoc played by hurricanes or river flood. Water in dreams implies something. It is a meaning that only you can decipher at the end of the day. However, there has been a long history of water symbolism that can help you understand the meaning of your dream somehow.

Earlier on, things associated with water or fluids were recognized as things belonging to our domain. Thus, the Greeks used to call all watery things as the Realm of Poseidon, Lord of oceans etc. The logic behind this belief was that the land rested upon water. And of course land is our domain.

Therefore, psychologically speaking, we are the creatures who rest upon our own emotional world. Our ability to reason would be in peril when we panic or are in anger. For instance, if you are dreaming of an approaching tidal wave, then this signifies that you have uneasiness about the emotions welling up inside you. Similarly, drowning shows that you have a fear that is too overwhelming, and it seems as if you do not have any control in your real world.

As for floods, they are believed to create something new for you. In historic times, some mythic kingdoms were believed to have drowned by their Gods to create something new. If you are having too many floods in your dreams, then it is an indication that you are going through a turn in your life. For the person who sees such dreams, the devastation in itself is not as horrifying as the fear can be. This explains why we get a feeling of awe and wonder before some natural disaster.

Those who dream about a watery doom can tackle this dream problem if they learn to take the full impact and force of their emotions. This will make you more conscious of your fear, and you can learn to swim through the thing you fear the most. Once we become fully aware of the water, we can learn to breathe water in our dreams. This will occur to you after the acceptance of the new way of living.

You might, however, wish to recall that the Poseidon Watery Realm is too big as it holds a whole universe of meaning. No doubt your dreams can go wild but they still have a limit. So the meaning of these water dreams depends on your exploration of its different paths. The significance of a threatening water dream differs from person to person, and only you are the person who can know the meaning of your dream.
